Make sensing data from industrial machines common sense for business and the planet.
Back in 2011, Arch’s CTO and Co-founder, Tim Burke, was in Tanzania trying to help rural village dwellers have access to clean drinking water. Previously, the focus had been on drilling new wells, but now they were aware of an alarming fact: 40% of the already-built wells would be broken at any given time! In fact, all across Sub-Saharan Africa, over 80% of such wells were broken, helping no one.
To solve this, he and his team endeavored to build an ultra-low-cost cellular monitoring system that could leapfrog traditional utilities the way cellular phones had leapfrogged landlines.
But the technology just wasn’t there.
In 2015, Andrew Scheuermann and Tim Burke, who did their PhDs together at Stanford, founded Arch to provide that technology and in 2016 wells serving up to 10,000 people were equipped in Tanzania.
The problem in Africa is not unique. Rather, people all over the world recognize such opportunities and are trying to build smart, connected infrastructure but lack the tools and resources necessary to do the job.
